They provide a sturdy, stable base for transport and presentation.

For extra protection with moist cakes or buttercream, you can line the board with a thin layer of fondant or use a cake board with a grease-resistant coating.

For decorated cakes, use a sturdy cake box sized to minimize movement, place the cake on a non-slip mat or use a dab of royal icing to anchor it to the board, and transport on a flat surface.
